The international design community has spoken and the winner of Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Year Award (BoYA) in the Outdoor Furniture Category is: Royal Botania’s “WAVE” hammock.
Unlike any other piece of its kind, it is neither a hammock, nor a sun chair, nor a parasol. It is an artwork that combines functionality with beauty and elegance. Designed by Erik Nyberg & Gustav Ström, the WAVE consists of electro-polished stainless steel and mesh. The canopy and seat sling are made from batyline. The fabric is semi-transparent while at the same time offering protection by blocking 86 percent of the sun's rays. The seat has a removable cushion in foam/fabric. WAVE is available in white, cappuccino, black or turquoise with two base options allowing for integration in the terrace or embedment into the ground. It measures an impressive 12 ft x 9.5 ft x 8 ft, yet stands on a single point. The construction gives it its unique floating impression, and allows it to withstand the elements. Plus, it can rotate 90˚ around the base, giving it additional flexibility depending on the position of the sun.
Given its grandeur, a simple US launch would not suffice. Instead the Belgian-based Royal Botania is taking a different approach and has coordinated a nation-wide tour. Architects, designers and design-savvy consumers alike are invited to “Catch the WAVE” as it travels around the country.
Like a pop-star, the larger-than-life piece will celebrate with a country-wide tour. First stop, a month-long stint at the International Polo Club in Palm Beach, Florida, followed by a cameo appearance at the Academy Awards in LA.
