THE RYUGYONG HOTEL IS BACK ... AFTER 16 YEARS BREAK

WELCOME TO PYONGYANG. Pay no attention to that enormous, unfinished 330 meters pyramid you see over there!

The Ryugyong Hotel is much like the North Korean regime itself: it’s monolithic, unstable, and menacing. Construction began in 1987 and ceased in 1992, due to the government's financial difficulties. The unfinished hotel remained untouched until April 2008, when construction resumed after being inactive for 16 years.



It is currently the world's 24th tallest building.

In September 2008, a senior North Korean official said the refurbishing of the Ryugyong Hotel will be done by 2012 - the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung. At the same time, an Orascom company official said the goal of the project was to at least give the structure's facade a facelift and make it more attractive. Thanx Connor for the info.

THE SAN ZHI PROJECT // TAIWAN

This place called the San Zhi complex by the sea outside Taipei, Taiwan. It was built in the 70s as a resort for residents seeking to get out of the city, but was later abandoned.

The speculation about why the site was abandoned varies, with the most interesting being that a series of fatal accidents occurred during construction, causing locals to believe the site was haunted, and therefore instigating the developer’s decision to stop constructio

I love the end of the world apocalyptic feeling this would be the perfect location for a fashion shoot.

ANN DEMEULEMEESTER SHOP IN SEOUL

Ann Demeulemeester shop in Seoul, Korea, was designed by Mass Studies. I am happy to see that more and more architects are using living facades like this one.

This proposal is an attempt to incorporate as much nature as possible into the building within the constraints of a low-elevation, high-density urban environment of limited space (378m2). The building defines its relationship between natural/artificial and interior/exterior as an amalgamation, rather than a confrontation.

Looking at those traditional homes in Iceland called Turf houses below it looks like our future may look like our past ... looking back to our past may not be such a bad idea sometimes !!!

BEIJING NATIONAL THEATER OPENING

China's new National Theater the day it opened to the public for the first time, in Beijing Friday June 15, 2007. The controversial egg-shaped theater, which will seat 6000 people when completed, was partially opened to the public Friday. Work on the theater was delayed after local architects and the public complained the design did not fit in with its surroundings. The theater will open for performances in September.
